The Truth About What I’m Working On

Forbidden ObsessionsThe theme for this month’s blog posts is about what we’re working on, and I have a confession to make:

Right now, I’m not working on anything.

Before you hyperventilate (or before my editor does!) I turned in edits on Matzoh and Mistletoe,  one of the stories in the Carina Press erotic romance holiday anthology, and I also went on vacation, so I’ve been on a reading binge. I don’t generally read a lot while I’m actively writing, so I binge-read between stories.  This vacation, I read all of Roni Loren’s books and I recommend them if you like BDSM stories and haven’t read hers.

While I sat on the beach, I also went on a thinking / research binge. I’ve had a few ideas rolling around in my head for a new series, so I’m trying to get my thoughts together on them.  I talked with some people, took pictures of things, and generally let the ideas stew.  They’re not…quite…ready yet, but they’re getting there.

In addition, I’m back to writing a novella I was working on before I submitted Matzoh and Mistletoe. It’s another BDSM story, but with a twist. And nope, not saying anything more about it – I don’t want to jinx things. I’m rather superstitious about talking about a story before it’s done, and I’m sure I’m not the only one!

Last but not least, I’m working on the promo for Forbidden Obsessions, which releases in just a few weeks. For those of you who’ve read my other stories, this is Gabe’s book, and he finally gets his happily ever after!

So that’s what’s new in Jodie’s world. What’s new in yours? If you’re writing, are you as superstitious as I am? If you’re reading, what book has your attention right now?

  1. Hi Jodie,

I’m glad you were able to take time off and indulge in some reading and plotting. Hopefully, those ideas you stewed about while on the beach result in more wonderful stories.

I also find it hard to read while I’m actively writing and ‘binge read’ in between projects. Since I’m in editing mode right now, I’m able to do a little reading. I’m currently reading Kat Latham’s, Knowing the Score. A sports romance set in London.

PS: I pre-ordered the Christmas anthology your novella is in and can’t wait to read it. :-)

    • Woo hoo! Thanks, Alison! I’m always afraid if I’m reading while I’m actively writing, it’s going to bleed over into my own stuff, and I don’t want that “cross-contamination!” I’m jealous of those who can read and write at the same time. Hardest part for me about writing? Lack of reading time!

  2. I think your post sums up a writer’s life perfectly. We may take a little time to take care of life outside of writing, the rest and recharge, or simply catch up on the laundry, but we’re seldom truly not working. Plotting, planning, and promo are as much a part of our business as putting words on the page. Thanks for reminding us of that!

  3. I don’t read within the genre I’m writing while I’m writing. Hence my backlog of hot biker stories LOL! Currently I seem to be in a Harlequin Presents and Historical groove with my reading. And it might have leaked into my writing a bit since I used the phrase “Gallic shrug” and my editor had no idea what that meant 😉

  4. Glad you enjoyed your vacation time. I don’t typically read within my genre while I’m writing a story. Today I finally finished Unraveled by Courtney Milan. I’ve had the physical book for a while, but I’d been so busy with writing and editing that I hadn’t gotten around to finishing the book.

I don’t read a lot of historical, but I absolutely adored this book and heroine. I also really love Courtney’s voice. I tore through the last half of the book and plan to go back and read the earlier books in the series.

As for writing, I’ve been writing in fits and starts as scenes of my current WIP keep coming to me. I’m excited to jump in and really go at this current project.
