Hi, I’m Jodie Griffin, and I’m a photographer.
I know, I know…this a writing blog. And I am a writer, but like many writers, I like to be creative in other ways as well. I sew a little, knit a straight line, crochet maybe a tiny bit more than that. But I’ve been taking pictures since I was little. If you follow me on Twitter or Tumblr, you may already know that. I’m not a professional photographer by any stretch, but it’s another aspect of my creativity and I like it a lot.
It’s kind of like writing, in a way. First you have to have an idea, a subject. Then you have to decide how best to show it off, and that either takes planning (I’m not much of a plotter) or winging it (pantster—that’s me!). Sometimes it works out, sometimes you need to retake the shot. Call it… editing. I’m not much for photoshopping my shots – the only adjustments you’ll generally see me make are cropping, stripping color to make it black and white, and the occasional color enhancement. Mostly, what you see is what I’ve shot.
This year, I decided to do a 365 project (but since it’s a leap year, a #366Project.) If you’ve never heard of them, it’s where you blog something – a photo, a poem, a joke, whatever— every day for a year. My personal rules – I decided on a mix of photography and writing, though it’s been more heavily photography. And I’m not taking the photos every day, at least not right now. I spend a day out and about, and spread those over a week or a few weeks. I’ve got pictures planned through the end of January already.
What I like about it: it doesn’t take up too much of my writing time, and in fact, recharges me for writing. I find that it focuses (heh) my brain a bit more, and allows me to turn off the chaos of daily life while I’m doing it. Once I’ve done that, it’s easier for me to slip into writing mode.
If you’d like to follow along on my photographic journey, you can find it here on my Tumblr (http://jodiegriffin.tumblr.com/tagged/366project) and it cross-posts at 10am ET daily onto twitter.
And for those of you who are all about the writing side, I’m working on it. I have books out on submission right now. I’m working on a super short story for Valentine’s day for a blog hop. And I did have a free, super kinky Christmas story out (Sleigh Bells Ring) in case you missed it.
