Here Comes the Sun, Little Darlings

Welcome Back Sun by Reese Ryan

Today’s post is brought to you by Señor Sol, kind enough to make its first appearance in nearly two weeks. Oh how I’ve missed you!

It’s been twelve consecutive days of rain here in North Carolina. We’ve all gotten a bit restless. After all, it isn’t uncommon here for the sun to peek it’s head out even during brief showers. So the absence of the sun for nearly two straight weeks has everyone around here in a dismal mood.

Of course, there were a few benefits to the continuous rain. In a drought, we needed the precipitation. The plants in my garden are lush, green and happier than ever. The time I would’ve spent outside walking or working in the yard was spent working on my novella instead. Yet, with everyone else in the house sidelined from their outdoor activities, I didn’t get as much writing (or more to the point, finishing) done as I hoped.

This is the novella that never ends. It just goes on and on, my friend. Some silly writer started writing it not knowing what it was. And she’ll continue writing it forever, just because …

So, with the sun shining through my office window, I’m prepared to focus on completing this novella, affectionately known as the novella that doesn’t end. (Cue Shari Lewis and Lamb Chop.)

Perhaps rainy days afford you more opportunity to write. But for many of us, the sunshine also has a direct impact on our moods. This writer needs her sunshine. Already I’m feeling warm and sunny inside and I’m ready to knock the task at hand out of the park. I’ve got Nina Simone’s laid back and oh-so-cool version of “Here Comes the Sun” playing in the background while I have a bit of a tête-à-tête with each of my main characters and one secondary character who keeps trying to steal the show.

There will be sleepless nights, tears and perhaps even a little spilling of blood, but this novella will be finished on time. And it will remain a novella.

Were you affected by the heavy rain pattern over the past two weeks? Does the weather have an impact on your mood or writing? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.

In the meantime, enjoy the sun, little darlings!
