Promotion: The Evil Step-Mother of Writing

LyndaAicherYup. Promotion is the hard-driving bitch of writing that a few warned me about, but no one told me the dirty truth about how hard it really is. It truly is the equivalent of Cinderella’s evil step-mother. It’s lurking, sometimes ambiguous, impossible to please and has a never-ending to-do list.

Blogs, ads, banners, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumbler, Pintrest, blah blah blah. It all runs together after a bit and it gets really dang exhausting trying to keep up. I’d blindly assumed that it would get easier with every book release. Silly me. The options and opportunities have increased while my time as decreased thus piling on the stress.

I’ve spent countless hours writing blog posts, answering Q&As, updating my website, creating newsletters, new banners, headers, graphics, swag, attending conferences and book signings…it just keeps growing. Long gone are the days of focusing on just writing the book, which is good but also tiring.

For me, the most annoying part about all the promoting is there’s really no way to tell if any of it works or what exactly does work. I tried creating short-links, but the data doesn’t tell if they bought after they clicked. And honestly, I don’t have the time to analyze the data anyway.

I have friends who’ve experimented with not promoting and they have all fallen back under the crazy woman’s influence. It doesn’t matter if there is an overload of promotion or if anyone is influenced to buy my book because of an ad or a blog post, I keep doing it because to not to feels like giving up and I can’t do that.
