Louise Rose-Innes and The Love Formula

profilepicIs there a formula for falling in love?

Environmental journalist, Evelyn is convinced there is, and it all starts with meeting the perfect guy. Expect just when she thinks she’s found him, she’s sent away on assignment to interview intrepid explorer and maverick scientist, Professor Sam Harker, on a remote island in the Bahamas.

Sam doesn’t tick any of the boxes on her ‘perfect man’ checklist. In fact, he’s the complete opposite, so why does he get under her skin more than any other man she’s ever met?

This is the theme for my holiday romance novella, The Love Formula. The idea came from reading about dating sites, who try to match like-minded people according to a pre-determined algorithm, or formula. While this type of matching has apparently got a high success rate, it doesn’t always work. I decided to play with this theory in my latest book.

I began by asking myself what kind of person would feel really rattled by an unexpected attraction to someone she never thought suitable. How about an super-organised, controlled, ambitious journalist who sets high standards for herself and always lives by the rules?

There is no way she’d ever be attracted to an unconventional, maverick, renegade professor, who does anything but play by the rules.

Except that’s exactly what happens – and it throws them both into turmoil. Add an unexpected hurricane into the mix and you have the perfect setup for a sultry, chaotic, roller-coaster ride of a romance.

I loved writing this story. It’s fun, crazy and sweet all at the same time. Perfect to enjoy with a glass of mulled wine, when it’s freezing outside. Here’s an extract…

Her interview subject stood in a small motor boat, bent over the engine The Love Formula - Louise Rose-Innesproviding a great view of his bronzed back and perfectly-formed butt. Evelyn stepped over his t-shirt, which he’d taken off and thrown onto the wooden slats of the pier. She cleared her throat.

Sam glanced up. His gaze lingered momentarily on her flip-flops and apricot Caribbean Sunset colored toenails, then jumped to her face.

“Ah. There you are,” he said, as if she’d been missing for ages, when in fact she’d been less than an hour. “I’m giving the boat a once-over, for our little trip around the island tomorrow morning. If you’re still interested, that is?”

He stood up, legs slightly apart to aid his balance, all bare-chested and sweaty, holding the wrench in his hand.

Oh boy… This was a definite Thelma and Louise moment, as Galaxy called it. The bit where Brad Pitt stood up on the bed and re-enacted his bank robbing routine and female hearts the world over beat a little faster. In fact, her own was thumping away extremely unprofessionally.

There was an oil smudge on his shoulder and another just under his right bicep. It made her want to wipe him clean. She tucked her hands in her pockets and forced her mind back to the reason she was on this island. His fault, she chanted to herself. His fault.

“What about my interview?” she asked, diverting her gaze. “When are we going to do that?”
