Of Heroes and Tuxedos – Laura Simcox

Laura Simcox publicity photo 2013If someone slapped two pictures down in front of me—one of a shirtless guy with smoldering eyes, and one of a guy in a tuxedo with smoldering eyes—the tux guy would get me. Every. Time.

It’s not that I have anything against smokin’ hot shirtless guys. Not at all! It’s just that a guy in a tux makes me melt. A guy in a tux doesn’t even have to try…or maybe he’s trying hard. Either way, he still might be hard to get—but there’s some Justin Timberlake in tuxreason he looks like a million bucks, whether he has a million or not. And I want to know that reason. I want to know that hero.

In my fantasy universe of hot guys in tuxes (where Daniel Craig rules as king supreme, Daniel Craig in tuxBond-style) I like to assume that what’s underneath the well-cut wool is a lonely heart. A searching heart—whether the wearer realizes it or not. Tuxes are so universal—they can be worn by alpha heroes and beta heroes alike. They can be equally swoon-worthy on rock stars, vampires, and average Joes. I’ve rarely met a guy who didn’t clean up nice in one of them, and a guy who’s delicious to begin with? In a tux, he makes my eyes bug out and my mouth unhinge.

Alexander Skarsgard in tuxThere’s something about the crisp white collar, the satin tie, the cut of the jacket over a broad back that, to me—is so romantic. It doesn’t matter if a hero accessories with expensive sunglasses and a private jet…or his grandfather’s watch and a tattoo peeking out above the collar. Both types of men are great heroes and both have a sense of mystery about them simply because they’re wearing tuxes.

Now, having said all that—I have yet to put a tuxedoed hero in one of my books—and Marlon Wayans in tuxI’ve written both alpha and beta heroes. It’s not that I don’t want to; it’s just that I haven’t found the perfect opportunity. Oh, I’ve substituted suits, which are also charming, but I’m looking forward to that perfect moment when I can dress one of my heroes in an amazing tuxedo. You can be sure that my heroine will thank me. J

What about you? Do tuxes ‘do it’ for you? When you picture an amazing hero, what is he wearing? Or, as the case may be…not wearing?

  2. Welcome to the Café, Laura! I appreciate a nice broad chest as much as the next girl, but I’m with you–I would prefer the guy in the tux. Love the photo selection of guys in tuxes. I remember when JT wore that tux and he looked yummy. As for James Bond, it’s nearly a guarantee with every movie in the franchise (and yes, I’ve seen them all) that Bond will be in a tux at least once. Daniel Craig is particularly delicious in one.

  3. Nice to see you here, Laura. Men in tuxes? Oh yes, please and thank you. A tux makes an average guy look great and an above average guy look spectacular. I’m not sure I’d take a guy in a tux over a shirtless guy, but it would be a close contest!
