Music is part of my life. Down to the foundation. From the time I wake up in the morning until I fall asleep at night I’ve got a playlist humming along in my head. Sometimes in the house, too. The playlist might be related to the book I’m writing or a non-fiction project I’m working on. It might just be music to get me motivated to clean the house or get a solid workout in.
While I’m writing, the playlist is book-related and the playlist changes from book to book. And although most of my playlists have a healthy dose of modern country and pop, a few old standards will sneak in – a great Motown hit like My Girl, for example, or a happy 80s hit like Walking On Sunshine or a moody Waylon Jennings song from my dad’s country stash.
As I was planning my new book, Mr. Right Now, a vacation song kept running through my head – Escape (Pina Colada Song). Because haven’t we all wanted to get away at some point? From our day-to-day lives and work and even from our significant others when they leave the toilet set up one more time? Yeah, we’ve all been there. And for three or so minutes, Escape, gives us a little release. I especially like the part where they realize their perfect matches are right there beside them. Is that a romance song or what?!?
Here are few more of the songs that helped me get Casey and Mason down on paper:
Mystery Train by Bon Jovi
Find a Way to My Heart by Phil Collins
Songs About Rain by Gary Allen
You Keep Me Hangin’ On by The Supremes
So What by Pink
I’m Yours by Jason Mraz
Feel That Fire by Dierks Bentley
Use Somebody by Kings of Leon
American Honey by Lady Antebellum
Impulsive by Wilson Phillips
What about you? Does music help you make it through the day?
Once upon a time, Kristina Knight spent her days running from car crash to fire to meetings with local police—no, she wasn’t a troublemaker, she was a journalist. When the opportunity to focus a bit of energy on the stories in her head, she jumped at it. And she’s never looked back. Now she writes magazine articles by day and romance novels with spice by night. She lives on Lake Erie with her husband and daughter. Happily ever after.
