I Need A Hero

Please welcome guest author Laura Moore to the Café!

Hi, Everyone! So very happy to be here at Contemporary Romance Café. It’s a real treat.

In my newest release, Once Touched, my protagonist is a man who feels anything but heroic. Ethan Saunders is a photojournalist who was embedded with an army unit in Afghanistan. Wounded by an IED, Ethan arrives at Silver Creek Ranch, a bucolic Northern Californian guest ranch, hoping that there, surrounded by sheep, cattle, and thousands of green acres, he will be able to escape the memories of his experiences.

The physical and psychological trauma of the explosion, combined with his guilt over surviving the blast when brave soldiers did not, have exacted their toll. Ethan not only perceives himself as unheroic, he can no longer be the man he once was. To look into his viewfinder is to be haunted by the faces he was supposed to be documenting.

It’s not easy to change the mind of a full-grown man who’s financially independent, has ignored his friends and families’ pleas to confront his demons and, above all, the specter of his perceived cowardice. I had to create a woman who would challenge Ethan, first by healing his spirit and then by having the strength to hold up the mirror of truth, while knowing that by doing so she might be jeopardizing their love.

In Quinn Knowles I found that woman. I hope you have a chance to read Quinn and Ethan’s story and that you will enjoy these characters’ journeys as much as I did writing them.

Once Touched

Once Touched coverThe youngest of the three Knowles siblings, Quinn has in her blood the love of the land and its beautiful creatures. Raising enough money to build an animal sanctuary is a dream Quinn lives every day—while fending off her family’s well-intentioned matchmaking schemes. Though harboring secret fears about intimacy, Quinn soon realizes she cannot fight her growing attraction to a man who has suddenly entered her life.

Scarred by his months in Afghanistan and the violence he witnessed there through his camera lens, photojournalist Ethan Saunders throws himself into hard ranching work as a prescription for healing. But falling for Quinn has given him the one thing he thought he’d lost forever: hope. Ethan discovers that Quinn, like the innocent animals she rescues, is shy, and afraid of entrusting her heart to a man. Passion soon awakens Ethan’s strength, and his tender seduction may be just what Quinn needs to believe in herself—and in his love.
