Double your pleasure?

Back in 2012 I was invited to be part of Northern Heat: Best Canadian Erotic Romance Short Stories, a Canadian print anthology featuring Canadian erotic romance authors. At the time, I wrote a 5,000 word short story about a husband, Max, who arranges to give his wife, Haley, her sexual fantasy: a threesome with another man (Max’s friend Noah). One condition she put on it, was that she never see nor hear nor find out who the other man was. Which meant she was blindfolded through the entire thing and though she has her suspicions, never truly learns Noah’s true identity.  And I called it Unashamed.

HHHea_200x300Then last year I was invited to be part of Hunks, Hammers and Happily Ever Afters, a bundle featuring blue collar workers. Since in the original version of Unashamed, Max owned his own construction company and since I’d always liked Max and Haley, and I’d wanted to explore them a bit more, I thought I’d dust them off and expand their story.  After all, I already have 5,000 words of the requested 18-22,000 words written. Easy peasy, right?

Um. No. I never do anything the easy way.

The trouble with my writing is that I have a lot of good intentions but no matter how much outlining I’ve done, within a half page once I start the actual writing, my characters grab the outline, maniacally laugh at it (or more likely, they laugh maniacally at me for thinking I had any control over them), tear it into pieces and set it on fire. With a fifty foot flame thrower. Hayley* and Max did exactly that — they totally torched that sucker.

Within a thousand words, they decided they not only weren’t married anymore, but that they’d not even dated before. And Hayley knew Noah this time. Oh, and she didn’t want to be blindfolded through the entire event.  She wanted to see the guys in action. (Okay, there may be a blindfold involved in one scene, but the rest of the weekend? She wanted to watch them, up close and personal.) But then—get this!—she also added the request that the guys get it on for her pleasure and have a true threeway. What she (and they) didn’t expect was that Max and Noah decided they weren’t getting it on only for her pleasure. Though Max was initially shocked at that revelation.

35,000 words later, I now have two totally different stories with the same title, and the same character names. Yes I could have renamed the characters, and yes, I could have retitled the new version. But I like the title, and I like the character names. They fit. (Then there’s that whole “I never do anything the easy way,” remember?) Plus since the short story in Northern Heat: Best Canadian Erotic Romance Short Stories is only available in a print, I don’t think it’ll matter to most folk anyway.  Although since I still retain the rights to publish the original short story digitally, I may rename it along with giving the characters new names.

So on November 3rd, Unashamed releases as part of the Hunks, Hammers and Happily Ever After bundle – and though you may think the title familiar from my works, it’s a brand new story. Only the names haven’t been changed to protect the innocent. 😉

*I have no explanation  other than I like the extra Y in Hayley’s name in this version. What can I say, I had to have some control over that woman!

Contractor Max Moretti knows that once he turns over the keys on his latest project, he and his business partner Noah McNaughton will have to say goodbye to shy but sexy house flipper, Hayley O’Connell. Something neither he nor Noah are ready for.  When Max overhears Hayley discussing a ménage fantasy, Max wonders if she’s the woman they’ve always wanted. With Noah’s help, Max constructs a plan to find out if Hayley is their Miss Right or just Miss Right Now…

Being sandwiched between the two sexy construction workers introduces Hayley to pleasure she’d never known before, but watching the two men care for each other quickly becomes an addiction. An addiction that both intrigues and overwhelms her.

One passion-filled night turns into two, and Max and Noah find themselves faced with a bigger challenge than revealing their sexy secrets to Hayley—convincing her that forever is better with three

    • My characters constantly surprise me, Jana. And those best laid plans? You’d think I’ve have learned not to even bother with planning anymore…I should turn into a pantser instead of trying to plot, but I keep trying.
