Authors I Admire

I get inspiration from many authors. All I have to do is to peruse my ‘keeper’ shelf to find the works of authors I admire.

WhiskeyBeach150I have many of Nora Roberts’ books on my keeper shelf. I admire her ability to always put me in her settings. She makes me feel like I’m right there with her characters, experiencing their surroundings, whether it’s Chesapeake Bay or New York City or Ireland. And she’s so prolific! As a writer, I’m in awe of the number and quality of the books she’s written. As a reader, I’m thrilled to have so many to choose from.

I love Suzanne Brockmann’s heroes, especially the Navy Seals and FBI agents. Who knew the first requirement of both those professions was hotness! I love her storytelling ability; her storiesTS 18 HfT 237 300 dpi keep me on the edge of my seat, never quite knowing what will happen next. I admire her for putting gay romance stories front and centre.

M.J. Rodgers is a writer whose books I have collected for years. She writes primarily for Harlequin Intrigue, but sometimes Harlequin American. I love her intricate, mysterious plots, the kind of whodunit plots that I’m never able to figure out in advance. And I’m always glad I don’t.

I love Rosamunde Pilcher. I’ll never forget crying my way through “Coming Home” and not being able to put the book down. Perhaps it was that book, as well as “The Shell Seekers” that got me hooked on World War Two stories.17791

Mary Balogh is someone I respect as a writer and a person. I know when I read one of her books that I’m going to root for her heroine and fall in love with her hero. And I’m going to laugh and cry and feel the depths of sadness along with highs of happiness. Mary Balogh’s books are always an emotional read.

For humor, I love Jennifer Cruisie. I adore her quirky heroines. For strong, alpha heroes, I love the grit of Linda Howard’s romantic suspense novels. For historicals, I love Jo Beverley and Jude Deveraux. “A Knight in Shining Armor” is one of my all-time favorite books.

So there you have it, a few of the writers I admire. Care to share some of yours?

And in the spirit of shameless self-promotion, my first novel with Carina Press, FIRST AND AGAIN, releases October 7, 2013. I’m ridiculously excited! FIRST AND AGAIN is available for pre-order at Amazon and Barnes and Noble. I now return you to your regularly scheduled blog post!

    • It is a great list, and I love all those authors. I’m also trying to broaden my horizons by reading authors that are new me. Recently, I started listening to books on my mp3 player when I’m at the gym. A couple of writers I’ve enjoyed lately are Lisa Scottoline (Don’t Go) and Sally MacKenzie (Bedding Lord Ned, currently listening to The Duchess of Love). On my e-reader I’m reading fellow CP author Dee Jay Adams’ “Danger Zone”. I’d love to hear other people’s recommendations for great reads so I can try even more authors.

  1. I’m a fan of the authors on your list, but I also love Susan Anderson, Rachel Gibson and Hayson Manning for smart, funny romance.

  2. My bookshelves tell the story of my fave authors: Sue Grafton, Rachel Gibson, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Deirdre Martin, Jill Shalvis, Maggie Osborne, Nora Roberts, LaVyrl Spencer and Joseph Finder. I’ve read all of their books more than once. LOL.
