The end of June marked an anniversary for me – it was the fourth anniversary of Texas Tangle’s release as one of Carina Press’s launch titles, and the first of (currently) five but about to be six books with Carina.
When I’d first come up with the idea for Texas Tangle, I’d planned for it to be a novella. A quick little romp of two neighbors and friends, Dillon and Nikki, who take their relationship to the next level. After a very hot weekend together. As I was writing it, Dillon’s friend Brett walked into a scene. And made himself quite a home. By the end of the 22,000 word first draft, I knew that my novella was no more, that Brett needed to be a bigger part of the story – and instead of being a twosome, they were going to end up as a threesome. So Texas Tangle burgeoned into a full length story that is still one of my favorites.
While I was writing the third draft, I wrote a scene where Brett, Dillon and Nikki go for Sunday dinner at Dillon’s parents’ house, and meet up with Dillon’s irascible grandmother who told them (and me) that her grandparents had been in a permanent threesome. That single line reverberated with me, not only as I wrote it but each time I read it during edits. The grandparents’ story really wanted to be told–except I had other stories I had to concentrate on first. Yet as Texas Tangle was launching and I kept putting up that dinner scene as an excerpt, that historical plot bunny kept leaping out of the bushes and attacking me. Jackson, Nate and Sarah were anxious for me to tell their story—my first m/m/f ménage and first historical. I loved them, and I loved writing their story and thankfully the smart folks at Carina Press offered me a contract for their story and Tangled Past was released almost exactly a year after Texas Tangle.
For a truly great ménage read, TEXAS TANGLE is the book for you. I couldn’t get enough of it and had to read it twice, okay – three times! ~Talia Ricci, Joyfully Reviewed
